Dropping a new pump into an existing pit is straightforward. Creating a pit where there isn't one means breaking concrete and excavating.
A sump pump deals with groundwater. A backwater valve deals with sewage coming back up the drain. People buy one and assume they're covered for the other, and then find out in the worst possible way.
It depends entirely on where the water comes from, which is why the first question we ask is where it appeared first.
Water seeping in at the joint where the floor meets the wall is groundwater rising in the soil around your foundation. That's a sump pump problem — a pit dug at the low point, a pump in it, and a discharge line taking the water far enough from the house that it doesn't just come straight back.
Water rising up through the basement floor drain is not rainwater, and it isn't coming from your house. When the municipal sewer fills faster than it can drain during a storm, the excess finds the lowest opening on the line — which is your floor drain. A backwater valve is a one-way gate fitted into the main drain: waste flows out normally, and when the sewer tries to push back, a flap closes and holds it there.
The valve is mechanical. No power, no electronics, nothing to fail in a blackout — which matters, because storms that overload sewers are the same storms that take the power out.
The City of Vaughan runs a protective plumbing subsidy that reimburses part of the cost of a backwater valve, and in some cases a sump pump. Markham runs its own programs separately.
The money is real and most homeowners never claim it, because the reimbursement comes after the work is inspected and the paperwork is filed, and that form sits on the kitchen counter until the deadline passes. We prepare the application as part of the job. It leaves with the invoice.

Backwater valve work normally needs a permit and an inspection. We pull and book both — and you need them for the subsidy anyway.
A backup system is a second pump, a battery and a charger. It roughly doubles a straightforward pump job, and it's usually worth it.
The pump has to put water somewhere far enough from the house. A long or awkward discharge run adds materials and time.
A finished basement, a tight mechanical room, or a slab thicker than expected all change the job once we can see it.
You approve the price before work starts. The subsidy is a reimbursement to you afterwards, not a discount we apply — so the invoice reflects the full cost either way.

Different municipality, different programs — Markham runs its own basement flooding initiatives.
They solve different problems and one does not substitute for the other. A sump pump handles groundwater — water rising around and under your foundation, pumped out before it reaches the floor. A backwater valve handles sewage pushed back by an overloaded municipal sewer. Plenty of homes need both.
Consider when a sump pump is most needed: during a severe storm. Consider when the power is most likely to fail: during a severe storm. A mains-only pump protects you at exactly the times it is most likely to be off. If the basement is finished, a backup is a sensible purchase.
Twice a year, and it takes two minutes. Pour a bucket of water into the pit until the float rises. The pump should start, clear the pit and shut off cleanly. Do it in early spring and again in autumn. Most failed pumps had already failed before the storm arrived.
No, and anyone who says otherwise is selling. A backwater valve stops one thing: sewage travelling backwards from an overloaded municipal sewer. It does nothing about groundwater through the slab, water around a window well, or a downspout discharging against the foundation.
It can, and it is worth a call to your insurer before and after. Many Ontario insurers treat sewer backup as an optional add-on rather than standard, and some offer better terms on a home with a valve installed and inspected. We make sure you have the documentation to ask.
