Streets of nineteen-twenties and thirties semis on lots barely wider than the house. Everything about plumbing here is shaped by access — how we get to the work, and how much of it you share with the person next door.
In a semi or a row, the two halves were built at the same time by the same trades, which means they usually have the same pipe, laid the same way, at the same age. That has a practical consequence people find surprising: if your neighbour has a problem, it is a fair predictor of yours. When one side of a pair gets a failed sewer lateral, the other side frequently follows within a few years.
Sometimes it goes further than similarity. On some older Toronto streets, two houses share a single sewer lateral out to the main — one pipe serving both. If that is your situation, a blockage is a shared problem and so is the repair bill, and it is worth establishing which arrangement you have before anything goes wrong rather than during an argument.
A house with no side passage changes what a plumbing job costs, and it is the single biggest difference between working here and working in a York Region subdivision. There is often no way to bring equipment to the back of the property except through the house. Excavating a lateral may mean working from the front only. A stack replacement in a narrow house has to be planned around where there is physically room to stand.
None of that makes the work impossible. It makes it slower, and we would rather price that honestly at the start than discover it with the floor already up.
Houses of this era were plumbed in galvanized steel with cast iron waste, and both are well past their design life. Galvanized corrodes inward until the bore is the width of a straw, which is why the pressure complaint here is almost always whole-house rather than one bad tap. Under the ground it is clay laterals, with mature street trees planted directly over them.
Repiping a narrow house is often easier than it looks, because there is less distance to cover. Where it gets expensive is finished basements and plaster walls, which is a question of what has been done since, not of the original build.
